Jerry Kenney - From the Sandlots of Beloit to Major League Baseball
Jerry Kenney was born on June 30, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri. His family moved to Beloit in 1946 when his father began work at Fairbanks. Lettering in baseball, basketball and football Jerry was one of Beloit Memorial High’s top athletes. He graduated in 1963. Jerry briefly attended a small college, in Pella, Iowa before he was offered a contract from the New York Yankees and the rest is history. On September 5, 1967, a twenty-two year old Kenney donned the famous Yankees' pinstriped uniform, beginning his rookie season. His first time in the batter’s box Jerry hit an inside the park home run against the California Angels. What a way to start as a rookie in the MLB! Jerry played for the Yankees from 1967-1972 and for the Cleveland Indians for one season, playing his final MLB game on April 19, 1973.
